Processor Design

Publisher: Springer

Pages : 528

ISBN-10 : 1402055293
ISBN-13 :
Processor Design addresses the design of different types of embedded, firmware-programmable computation engines. Because the design and customization of embedded processors has become a mainstream task in the development of complex SoCs (Systems-on-Chip), ASIC and SoC designers must master the integration and development of processor hardware as an integral part of their job. Even contemporary FPGA devices can now accommodate several programmable processors. There are many different kinds of embedded processor cores available, suiting different kinds of tasks and applications.

Processor Design provides insight into a number of different flavors of processor architectures and their design, software tool generation, implementation, and verification. After a brief introduction to processor architectures and how processor designers have sometimes failed to deliver what was expected, the authors introduce a generic flow for embedded on-chip processor design and start to explore the vast design space of on-chip processing. The types of processor cores covered include general purpose RISC cores, traditional DSP, a VLIW approach to signal processing, processor cores that can be customized for specific applications, reconfigurable processors, protocol processors, Java engines, and stream processors. Co-processor and multi-core design approaches that deliver application-specific performance over and above that which is available from single-core designs are also described.

The special design requirements for processors targeted for FPGA implementation, clock generation and distribution in microprocessor circuits, and clockless realization of processors are addressed. Tools and methodologies for application-specific embedded processor design are covered, together with processor modelling and early estimation techniques, and programming tool support for custom processors. The book concludes with a glance to the future of embedded on-chip processors.

Modern Microwave Circuits

This book has been written to address the analysis techniques and practical applications of microwave printed passive circuits. Instead of focusing mainly on printed circuits, however, we have chosen to adopt a much broader scope so that a wide audience from research students to design engineers can benefit from it. From this respect, we tried to keep the balance between theory and applications as much as we could. Each chapter is also tailored such that they can be studied independently without losing the coherency. Recent advances in digital computers and numerical techniques have placed computational electromagnetics in the reach of almost every electrical engineer. When used properly, computer simulations greatly increase the success in microwave circuit design. This is especially important in microwave printed circuits (i.e., microstrip circuits) where quasi-static or empirical solutions are not accurate enough at microwave- and millimeter-wave frequencies.

Dry Clutch Control for Automotive Applications

Author(s): Pietro J. Dolcini, Carlos Canudas-de-Wit, Hubert Bechart
Publisher: Springer
Date : 2010
Pages : 144

ISBN-10 : 1849960674
ISBN-13 :
The comfort of a car as perceived by the driver can be as important to its commercial success as its performance and fuel efficiency. Modern engines deliver increased torque and there is a current trend to reduce transmission-shaft stiffness, both phenomena militating against maintaining, let alone increasing, ride comfort.

Dry Clutch Control for Automated Manual Transmission Vehicles analyses the control of a part of the powertrain which has a key role in ride comfort during standing-start and gear-shifting manoeuvres. The mechanical conception of the various elements in the driveline has long since been optimised so this book takes a more holistic system-oriented view of the problem featuring:

• a comprehensive description of the driveline elements and their operation paying particular attention to the clutch;

• a nonlinear model of the driveline for simulation and a simplified model for control design, complete with a standing-start driver automaton for closed loop simulation;

• a detailed analysis of the engagement operation and the related comfort criteria;

• different control schemes aiming at meeting these criteria;

• friction coefficient and unknown input clutch torque observers;

• practical implementation issues and solutions based on the hands-on experience of implementing optimal engagement strategies on two Renault prototypes.

Dry Clutch Control for Automated Manual Transmission Vehicles will be essential reading for automotive engineers working on model design and contains much to interest the academic researcher with its combination of theoretical results and application in the important and widely studied field of automotive engineering and control.
